5 Ways to Enjoy a Greener 2019

Are you aiming for a greener lifestyle in 2019? With each year that goes by, we hear more about how we need to be taking action to look after our planet to safeguard it for the future.

If you’re not ready to go vegan or if you’re finding it difficult to go plastic-free altogether, there are still plenty of steps that you can take to lead a more eco-friendly lifestyle in 2019. Here are five to get you started:

1. Invest in a Reusable Coffee Cup

Many of us need a caffeine hit to kickstart our mornings, with figures published last year by the Environmental Audit Committee showing that seven million disposable coffee cups - not all of which can be recycled - are used in the UK every day, which is around 2.5 billion per year.

That’s a lot of waste, with the government even talking about introducing a ‘latte levy’ to place an extra tax on disposable cups to discourage their use.

You can stop contributing to this high level of waste easily by investing in a reusable coffee cup. There are so many designs to choose from that everyone can find a perfect cup to match their style, with some coffee shops offering incentives like points towards a free drink if you ask for your drink to be poured into your own cup.

Of course, you’ll save some pennies too if you make your own coffee at home to take out in your reusable thermal mug, meaning you can feel good about doing your bit for the planet and the money you’re saving.

2. Use Public Transport More

Using public transport more can massively help to reduce your carbon footprint. Depending on the length of your commute, it may see you save money compared to your previous fuel spend too.

You'll likely get a little more exercise by taking the bus or train, as you’ll have to walk to the stop or station, rather than just stepping out of your front door and getting in the car.

You may find that not driving anymore helps you to feel less stressed, as you won’t be sat behind the wheel frustrated in traffic jams - you'll be able to start your day by reading a book or listening to a podcast instead.

3. Always Carry a Reusable Shopping Bag

The 5p charge for plastic bags has been in place in the UK since October 2015, but many of us still find ourselves caught out without a reusable bag when we're at the shops. If this sounds like you, try to keep one in your coat pocket or handbag at all times, and you'll always be prepared.

There have been reports that the government is considering upping the plastic bag charge to 10p, with smaller retailers potentially set to start charging for the first time too - even more reason to take your own with you.

Like with reusable coffee cups, there are so many ‘bags for life’ available that there’s something to suit everyone’s style.

4. Explore More Natural Beauty Options

If you’re committed to living a greener lifestyle in 2019, you need to assess every aspect of your life. Buy locally grown food so you’re not contributing to high transportation emissions, see if you can manage with your thermostat turned down a notch to lower your energy usage, always question whether you really need to print a document out, and buy sustainably sourced beauty products wherever you can.

At Natural Beauty Online, we’re proud to stock Dermikelp® , a gorgeous range of skin and haircare products made from the naturally nutrient-rich sea kelp ecklonia maxima. This has been carefully harvested by hand from waters off the west coast of South Africa, before being turned into these nourishing products.

Knowing little details like this about the beauty products that you use lets you know they’re sensitive to the environment as well as your skin, so you can enjoy them guilt-free.

There are so many lovely natural beauty options out there, so do your research before buying anything new to use on your skin and hair to make sure you’re using the best kinds of products for you and the world around you.

5. Recycle More

We could always be recycling more, with government data showing that just over 45% of the UK’s household waste was recycled in 2016, meaning more than half of our waste still isn’t recycled.

Making an effort to only buy products with recyclable packaging can help you to do your bit to increase this percentage - if you’re going for the Dermikelp® products we recommended earlier, you can be assured that their packaging is 100% recyclable.

Make achieving a more sustainable beauty routine one of your goals for 2019. Shop the eco-friendly Dermikelp® range here.
